Jipijapa Happenings
In the city of Jipijapa, Ecuador, La Prosperina Foundation has developed a very special relationship with the city government. There is now an agreement in place for them to occupy and manage the iconic “Hat” in the “Parque Central de Jipijapa” (Jipijapa Central Park). They are now operating a coffee stand featuring La Prosperina coffee (along with other local coffees) and sharing space with several local cottage industries. The city is delighted to have this previously unused building serving the people once again.
The coffee stand in Parque Central is a magnet for young people from all walks of life, including the local university. Just as in other countries, sharing the love of Jesus over a cup of coffee is a natural happening for the staff, especially The Hat manager, Liliana Choez, and barista David Zea. Our shared goal is to “blend” the coffee ministry with a Young Life group to draw many of these youth to faith in Christ.
In the summer of 2023, several local young people attended a Young Life camp and are now working to bring that wonderful ministry to Jipijapa.
Back in June, (during our Board’s visit) coffee was on our minds. Government officials were on-hand for a very formal inspection visit to the Hacienda La Prosperina coffee farm. The goal was to gain certifications as an organic coffee producer as well as documenting the farm’s Social Impact and Fair Labor Practices.
The next day , David and La Prosperina coffee were featured at a regional competition in Portoviejo , Ecuador. David and Pedro Lopez, our coffee consultant, proudly brought home the first and second place in the Aero press contest! They advanced to the next level and a few weeks later they participated in the national Aero press competition in Latacunga, in the Andean region of Ecuador.
David’s journey to this place in his life is exciting and inspiring. Look for a future post telling about this young man’s life of dedication to the Lord Jesus Christ.
