Projects
Here are our major projects…
Naomi’s Village (Now)
Pregnant girls ages 10-17 have very few options for safe housing and care in the Jipijapa canton of Ecuador. Our solution: Naomi’s Village.
Naomi’s Village will provide integrated care including temporary shelter for pregnant girls younger than 18, who have been sexually abused by a close member of their family setting.
We have researched and collected information about these kinds of projects in Ecuador. There is a lack of these services for abused children and adolescents, particularly for those who need to be taken out of their own family setting because the abuser is a close family member.
Adolescents who become pregnant as a result of abuse are often in extremely difficult situations, and therefore it is even more complicated to find a home for them.
We are partnered with La Prosperina Foundation to build and operate Naomi’s Village. Construction is scheduled to start in 2023 before the rainy season begins. We expect to be open for business by the fall of 2024. By the end of 2025, our goal is to have 5 homes to provide shelter and integrated assistance to 40 girls pregnant as a consequence of sexual abuse in the province of Manabí. We will care for them and their babies until they are ready to re-enter society.
Young Life Outreach (Soon)
Young Life of Ecuador has a strong and growing national organization, and is reaching out to many areas of the country. One area yet to be reached is Jipijapa and surroundings. We plan to partner with Young Life to present the living gospel to this area. One key piece is already in place: La Prosperina Foundation has entered a multi-year contract with the city to manage and operate the iconic “Hat” in Jipijapa’s town square which draws young people in large numbers to eat, drink great coffee, and just hang out.
We will provide support to Young Life in Jipijapa as they begin and then expand this vital ministry to the youth of the entire canton.
Medical Clinic (Long Range)
Jipijapa and its vicinity have only one, 50-bed hospital to serve a population of over 150,000. A second, specialized option is needed. Our solution: La Propserina Medical Clinic.
Jipijapa (approximately 71,000 inhabitants) has a basic 50-bed hospital, which also serves the cantons of Puerto López, Paján, and other nearby parishes with over 150,000 inhabitants total. There is one primary health care center.
A study conducted on the prevalence of malnutrition in infants who attended the health center of Jipijapa canton in the period 2017-2019 among 235 children age 0 to 9, showed that 47.2% had a diagnosis of malnutrition. This problem has intensified during the COVID- 19 pandemic in the whole of Ecuador.
We will offer general and family care, pediatrics, OB/GYN, nutrition, dentistry, clinical lab, ultrasound service, and specialized care such as ophthalmology and optometry, through agreements with other foundations.
Coffee Plantation
Hacienda La Prosperina is a 100-hectare (247.10 acres) farm in a prime location 20 kilometers southeast of Jipijapa, 650 meters above sea level.
It has a very nice micro-climate with temperatures that go from 17°C to 23°C during the coolest season (between June and November). The rainy season goes from December through May with warmer temperatures. There is a biodiverse flora and fauna in the region, and it has many attractions for people who enjoy nature (trekking, climbing, bird watching, or simply camping). Biking is also common in the area.
La Prosperina Foundation currently has an agreement with Nicki and Ron Coil to donate proceeds of an established, 4-hectare (9.88 acres) coffee plantation, 10 hectares (24.71 acres) of a new coffee plantation, and other crops or services provided by Hacienda La Prosperina (such as ecotourism, camps, etc.). These proceeds can help support the programs of the foundation.
